A Milestone Gift of Earrings

Graduation was a big deal for me. I struggled all through high school with the motivation not only to continue on toward graduation but also with studying and remaining focused on the work. At one time I was too distracted by boys and just plain boredom and there was a question about whether I would even have the credits to graduate.

Then one day something happened to change the way I thought about school. My family took a short vacation to Washington DC and while we were there we went to the Smithsonian Institutes. That is where I first saw the Hope Diamond.

I have always loved jewelry, so I quickly calculated in my head how large a pair of diamond earrings could be if that stone was used. On that same trip, my parents took us to the poorer area of town and the one thing I remember is seeing a homeless man lying under newspaper in a corner outside of a building.

That is when I knew that I had to get serious about studying. When I graduated from college, after much struggling to get my grades back where they should be, my grandfather presented me with my own pair of diamond earrings.
